      An encyclopedia of child labor information from around the globe.

 

Dictionary of American History.  REF/E/174/D52/2003.

      Vol.2, p.23, has brief article on child labor.  See Index volume for further references.

 

Encyclopedia of American Social History.  REF/HN/57/E58/1993.

     Vol.1, p.112, refers to factory system in Massachusetts.  Vol.2, p.1451, has a reference to gender segregated division of labor among children in mills.  Vol. 3, p.2023-2050, includes chapter titles “Childhood and Children” and “Adolescence” that include some material on labor.

 

Encyclopedia of the North American Colonies.  REF/E/45/E53/1993.

     Vol.2, p.739-760, deals with childhood and adolescence in the colonial period and has some information on child labor in the 17th and early 18th centuries.  See p. 747, 749, 758-759.

 

From Virtue to Character: American Childhood, 1775-1850.  REF/HQ/792/U5/R37/1996.

     Ch.6, p.125, discusses work that children performed and its contribution to the family economy.  Pages 134-137 focuses on child labor during the Industrial Revolution.

 

Growing Pains: Children in the Industrial Age, 1850-1890.  REF/HQ/792/U5/C565/1997.

     Ch. 5, p. 122, is about children’s labor in mills, on farms and at home.  Pages 131,138-140 focus on Industrial Revolution.  Sophisticated reading level.

     Ch.3, p.60, discusses immigrant child labor in the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries.

 

Lewis Hine’s Photography & Reform in Rhode Island.  Greene  TR/140/H52/V64/1982.

 

Victorian America 1876-1913. REF/E/168/S55/1996.

     P.367 has a copy of a 1906 letter written describing the conditions under which youngsters  labored in coalmines. This would be considered a primary source document.

 

West’s Encyclopedia of American Law   REF/KF/154/W47/1998.

     Vol. 2, p.320-322, article on “Child Labor Laws,” explains the general outline of the federal law today.  Vol. 4, p.147, has a brief paragraph on the background of the Child Labor Laws.
